How to learn fluent English: Here is list of problems and their solutions to your rescue!

English has become a widely used language all over the world and knowing the language fluently helps us in communicating better with people all around. Communication skills are very essential for every human and knowing the English language fluently helps a lot.

When a person is fluent in any language, this means that he/she is quick with speaking and writing the language. Although people can learn and understand a language at their own pace, they often find it difficult to express themselves. As for the English language, its immense popularity and wide acceptability make people more conscious; that they might be made fun of if they make any mistake.

To be more fluent in the English language, we first need to identify what are the problems that restrict our vocabulary. Identifying and understanding these problems first will help in overcoming them. Here is a list of some common problems that people face while learning English:

Poor Vocabulary: A vast range of words

Since English is a widely popular language all over the world, the language gets updated with new words very often. Words from various other languages get incorporated into the dictionary every year. Hence, it is difficult for even native speakers to know all the English words.

So, how vocabulary will help you in speaking fluently?

Having a good vocabulary in any language comes with the knowledge of about 4000 to 10000 words. The list might seem long but everything is possible with practice, right? A good way to improve your vocabulary is to play word games like scrabble.

Make a list of the new words you come across and write their meanings. You can take four or five words in a day and revise them at your convenience. Repeat this pattern for a few days and you will be benefitted from new words added to your vocabulary regularly.

Pronunciation, confusing spellings, and heteronyms

English is not a phonetic language, so it doesn’t follow the rules of phonetics. For example, the word read is pronounced differently in two different tenses. Also, rules like not pronouncing h in honor add to the difficulty of learning the language.

You know there are a vast number of words in English and a lot of them have confusing spellings; such as those which have similar pronunciations. Homophones such as bolder and boulder;pear and pair have similar pronunciations but are of different meanings.

Heteronyms in English are another hurdle to learning the language. Words like address and advocate are used with different meanings under different contexts. Regular practice, again, is the key to mastering the issues. Saying the words aloud will help in improving pronunciation. Spellings should be spelled out louder and written regularly.

As for heteronyms, make a list of words that you come across, write their meanings, and revise them regularly.

Feeling embarrassed

Feeling embarrassed is a big reason behind the lack of fluency in English; as it prevents you to practice real-time conversations. We generally associate knowing English with smartness. People who don’t know English are often made fun of.

The first step to overcoming this hurdle is the acceptance of the fact that nobody knows everything. Although English is a universal language, there are variations in dialects and pronunciations. So how to be fluent in English to avoid getting into embarrassing situations? Practice! Talk in English to your close friends and family members who won’t judge you or make fun of you for your mistakes.

To be more confident, practice talking in English alone in front of the mirror. Your conversation skills also depend on the confidence displayed in your body language.

Colloquialisms and Slang: a confusion!

Slangs and colloquialisms are most difficult to learn for someone who is not very much exposed to the culture of English-speaking communities.

To learn the commonly used words in daily conversations, one can try following pop culture. Listening to their songs and watching their series, television shows and movies can give a nice insight into the culture as well as the colloquial terminology.

Now that we have identified the various problems that we face while learning fluent English, let’s explore the ways by which we can learn how to be fluent in English and how to improve our communication skills in English.

Hire a personal tutor

An experienced tutor will help you in learning the basics of the language as a whole.

You can learn everything about English; from basic grammar to correct usage of words and right pronunciation.

You can opt for group sessions or 1-on-1 sessions at your convenience.

You can join offline or online classes.

You can also use apps and watch tutorial videos on how to introduce yourself in English or how to learn English at home.

Speak as much as you can

Practicing spoken English regularly is the only and foremost way in improving your fluency. Speak with friends and family members.

Read out English sentences from books, online articles, and newspapers aloud.

Speak with yourself in front of the mirror and observe your facial expressions and body language. Do not focus much on grammar.

Thinking too much will make you overly conscious. As a result, you won’t be able to learn if you don’t speak. Practicing regularly will improve your grammar anyway!

Expose yourself more to English

If you read and hear English regularly, it will be much easier for you to learn the language. Read English articles and newspapers. Listen to English songs, news reports, and podcasts. Watch English

documentaries, series, and movies. These will also help you in knowing about the culture of native English speakers.

You can try some karaoke as well. Try to sing your favorite English songs from your memory or by looking at the lyrics. With this method, you can learn new words and phrases.

Conclusion: Practice regularly to gain fluency

Fluency is not a one-time achievement and requires continuous practice. Nowadays, plenty of resources and study materials are available on the internet to learn any new language. Taking notes regularly, writing down the meanings of new words, revising them, and practicing speaking English regularly are the most essential ways in becoming fluent in English.

As mentioned in the points above, getting to know the native English culture through entertainment is also an amazing way to learn English.

THE PURSUIT OF EARNING A ‘DECENT SALARY’ IN INDIA

A committee headed by the reputed economist Bibek Debroy prepared a report called the State of Inequality in India; using the data collected by different governmental agencies and
found that people earning more than ₹25000 were among the top 10 percent of India
wage earners. So anyone earning more than 25000₹ should ideally consider themselves
lucky in this country. But since idealism is not a luxury most of us can afford, we have to ask
– is ₹ 25000 a decent salary?
A decent salary is one that takes care of all day-to-day expenses while still leaving enough
money to save for future expenses. This is hence a variable concept. 25000₹ is a decent
salary for villages and small towns because the expenses incurred by the inhabitants here
are less because of the reduced cost of living, better health due to a non-polluting and non-
stressful environment, and because most of the vegetables and groceries needed are
available in their own farms.
But for a metropolitan city, 25000 is not a decent salary. The monthly expenses in buying
gas cylinders, groceries and vegetables, school uniforms and clothes, school fees, travelling
expenses, building maintenance fees, electricity and water bills and so on add very well up
to 25000 minimum. Add to that the cost of paying the premiums for medical insurance,
unforeseen expenses of illnesses, or spending for eating out or going to a movie, then the
monthly expense is 30000 in these places. So to maintain ample savings, as well as to deal
with unexpected expenses, a monthly salary of ₹40,000 would be a decent salary in a
metropolitan city.
There is hence a pursuit of earning ‘decent salaries’, especially in metropolitan cities
whereby it is conventionally held that being able to earn more would only happen if one
studies more. Likewise, the highest yardstick of education, viz. The pursuit of a doctorate or
PhD in any field is deemed to be the getaway of earning a ‘decent salary’. However, is it
really worth it?
This article will help us to answer the question of whether pursuing a doctorate in any field is
worth its trouble. In an academic sense, it is of course justified since it adds to ones store of
knowledge while generating new knowledge for others. But what about a career option?
A PhD, pursued from the right institution, does indeed add to ones value as an academician,
and such people earn well to the tune of a hundred thousand per month, which is an
excellent salary in India. But it should be taken into consideration here that only a PhD
pursued from a reputed institution garners such a salary, and that such posts are now
becoming reduced in numbers due to the gradual privatisation of education in the state.
One of the big errors that students pursuing doctorates do is to devote the years of their
study solely to their thesis. Now, this is a viable option if the student has secured the Junior
Research Fellowship which provides a monthly stipend for the researcher to undertake his
research. But otherwise, it is just three empty years on their CV in which they could have
earned further work experience, and hence worked their way towards a decent salary, which
would positively influence their increments and promotions. Merely pursuing only ones

doctoral dissertation means that the store of ones knowledge remains limited only to one
particular field, and also that one does not get a practical experience in the field (be it
teaching or working in a research capacity) which one would then have to acquire separately
after securing their PhD, that is if they do complete it. Because, many doctoral students
languish in their efforts to secure a PhD and fail, thus wasting years of their academia as
well as their professional life, an outcome which could have been avoided if they had been
doing a job along with working on their doctorate.
Therefore, taking into consideration the decent salary of 40-50000 required to thrive in an
urban setting of India, a doctorate is a good career option. But the risks of pursuing it can be
effectively minimised if the researcher works part-time while pursuing his/her research.
Moreover, keeping this option aside, a person can be successful even at the age of 20, by
acquiring practical real-life advanced skill sets through professional and relevant courses,
and consequently devoting themselves to the journey of gaining work experience early on in
their career path. Hence, it can be said that associating the notion of a ‘decent salary’ with a
particular age or dignified degree is merely a myth, all that is actually required on the path of
success is passion, relevant skill set and hardwork.

The Story of a Legend who struggles against the odds 4 a Successful Career

The Story of a Legend

The Story of a Legend

The Story of a Legend

Come what may, life goes on, upwards and only upwards….

What happens on reaching rock bottom? When you think that there is no way out, when you
are drowning in a sea of miseries, agonised with calamities, helplessly looking to stay afloat,
that moment defines your entire life, whereby you can hold the setback by its neck and
propel yourself to achieve the greatest milestone of your life for the world to be awestruck by.

And this is what has precisely defined the life of a remarkable wizard: Mark Zuckerberg.
In January 2004, a computer science student at Harvard University was at a low point in his life.

He had recently been temporarily suspended from his college for hacking into its
databases and denounced as a misogynist in the student newspapers for running a website
called Facemash which let users compare female students on their attractiveness.

Having got admission to the most esteemed University in the world, the man had become a social pariah there. Yet for the computer science student christened Mark Zuckerberg, who was only twenty years of age then, the only course of life that existed was upward, overpowered by the zeal to excel and exceed.

Zuckerberg did not care much for being at Harvard, being an autodidact since his earliest
beginnings. Born to a family of doctors, he learned to code by himself, and went on taking
new strides with extreme intellect and valour. In high school, he built a program that allowed all the computers between his house and his father’s dental office to communicate with each other.

By the end of his high school, he had built a music player called the Synapse Media
Player which used machine learning to learn the user’s listening habits, and then give him
recommendations based on the same. In college he gained fame from the very beginning for
developing CourseMatch, which allowed the students of Harvard to make class selection
decisions based on the choices of other students and also to help them form study groups.

It was this Zuckerberg who sat detached from what was generally considered the lowest
point of his life, contemplating his biggest idea yet. Having understood the popularity of
Facemash and CourseMatch was based on the need for social connectivity, Zuckerberg was
contemplating the creation of a website which would alter forever the way humans
communicated with each other by shifting the bulk of this communication to the digital space.

It would cut across all lines of race, gender, class, caste, nationalities, etc. and create truly
the global village which Marshall McLuhan dreamt of. And therein came Facebook.
The success story of Facebook need not be recounted for we provide testament to it
everyday when we open up our phones and use WhatsApp and Instagram, now both owned
by Facebook.

What is to be learnt here is the struggle : Zuckerberg had not learnt
programming from any interested teacher, instead he educated himself from the vast amount of resources available online and in books.

When he was coming up with the idea of Facebook, Zuckerberg was an ostracized man, suspended from the most esteemed University in the world with a black mark on his character, and being denounced by everyone on campus as being a pervert.

Even when Facebook got running, immediately three other students of Harvard sued Zuckerberg for having apparently copied their idea.

Zuckerberg’s life is hence marked by immense struggle. But even at the lowest ebb of his
life, Mark managed to get ahold of probably the greatest entrepreneurial innovation of the
twenty first century and is now the billionaire we know because of it.

How did he keep this mindset ? Because of his education. This is not, of course, education merely in the sense of rote learning and getting good grades. This is education in its truest sense, which is the ability to face life confidently because you know that the knowledge you possess will weather you through any situation that life throws at you.

Such an education is the need of the hour. Coming from a middle-class background like
most of us, left with absolutely nothing, Zuckerberg’s knowledge gave him the confidence
that regardless of what may come, he will find ways to be financially stable. Such a true
education, which couples wisdom with an unfailing confidence in oneself, is sure to let any
person succeed in life, and forge ahead regardless of any troubles

  • Comparing oneself with others

Do you compare yourself to others?

You must be doing that, that’s why you’re reading this.

But why??

Oh, okay, it’s not your fault.

We’ve been raised to come first in everything from our childhood.

Do you prefer to eat bananas over mangoes just because they take less time to bear fruits?

You Don’t.

Because, you know that both of them have their own taste and value.

In the same way, you are unique.

It’s just, everybody’s timing to get success is different.

Have patience, your time will come.

Never compare yourself because comparison steals your joy. It makes you feel unworthy and incapable.

  • Living in the past

Can you go back in time and change your past?

No, Right

So, why do you dwell in the past?

It’s just wasting your time and energy.

If you keep doing this, the time which you have right now will become your past.

As you can’t do anything about your past.

Focus on your present and make it beautiful.

  • Negative Self- Talk

What do you say to yourself daily?

I’m a loser or I’m a champion.

What you say to yourself determines your happiness to a large extent.

So, always say positive words to yourself and avoid negative thoughts.

  • Spend time with your close ones

It feels great to spend time with people who understand you.

  • Try your hobbies

What do you do to chill out?

Listen to music, dance, party with friends or sing??

Whatever you love to do, just do it.

It’ll relax your mind and will help you in relieving stress.

You’ll feel extremely happy and joyful.
